Gyroscopes measure the spacecraft’s spin rate about an axis, allowing the spacecraft to precisely measure its rate of rotation, a critical component of the attitude determination and control system. The CVG Gyro assembly is intended for missions with the tightest pointing requirements, and combines several 2-axis gyroscopes into a single module, providing very accurate measurements.
The gyroscope assembly measures spacecraft angular velocity. The spacecraft attitude is estimated by fusing the measurements from the gyroscope and star trackers using onboard navigation algorithms. The attitude and angular velocity estimates are critical for slewing and pointing the spacecraft.
