Terran Orbital hosted Lockheed Martin and the Space Development Agency (SDA) at Terran Orbital’s newly expanded state-of-the-art Irvine, Calif. facilities. Lockheed Martin and SDA made the visit in celebration of Terran Orbital’s successful delivery of the first of ten satellite buses to Lockheed Martin in support of the Space Development Agency’s Tranche 0 Transport Layer.

The Terran Orbital designed and built Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment, otherwise known as CAPSTONE, launched this morning at 9:55 UTC / 5:55 a.m. EDT / 2:55 a.m. PDT aboard Rocket Lab’s Lunar Photon spacecraft bus on an Electron launch vehicle from Rocket Lab Launch Complex 1 in Māhia, New Zealand.

The full name of the mission is the Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment. It will act as a scout for the lunar orbit where a crewed space station will eventually be built as part of Artemis. That outpost, named Gateway, will serve as a way station where future crews will stop before continuing on to the lunar surface.
